This graph (which will open in a new window) represents October 2006 to August 2009*. It was produced using Google Docs, which is the way I track my online earnings. This approach was very useful given I began traveling in late 2007 without a laptop, and even when I bought one a few months later in Hong Kong (because my Asus AC adapter kept breaking on me…3 separate times to be exact – Nepal, Thailand, and Cambodia).

I take heart in the slow upward trend. I’m on the right track, and it could very well be a slippery slope to much greater income.

An old childhood friend of my brothers, who is the co-founder of an internet start-up in NYC, recently commented to me that “it should be easier to go from $500/month to $5,000, then $0 to $500.

I bet he’s right, and I’m looking forward to finding out!

Your friend is right, id even say the first $100 is the hardest :-)

That makes me feel so encouraged!

By the way, I heard last night that the friend, co-founder of http://www.yext.com, just secured $25 million in new VC funding as a result of an appearance at TechCrunch 50. He might be the second young millionaire I’ve had the pleasure of knowing.

I’d be happy with thousandaire (if it meant being my own boss).

      Cute goldfish site!

I hadn’t realised you had this blog as well – your gobackpacking site made me smile back 2007 when I was prepared to escape the cubicle – thanks for that it was a pretty much a low point in my life!

Totally the first money you earn online is the hardest – particularly if you have never been in business before – I like the way you did the graph – I have been thinking of doing something similar but hadn’t realised you could do it with google docs thanks for the tip

Hi Lissie, I’m so glad you didn’t change your gravatar photo since you left those comments on my blog, because I might not have connected the dots and found your blog.

Google Docs doesn’t have a lot of advanced features, but it has suited my record-keeping needs for the last 2.5 years. :) You might also be interested to know you can save a Google text document as a PDF, which is how I created my ebook.
